Lost World

Gyula Nemes, Hungary 2008, 20:05 min., documentary

Jury statement: Within the flow of a repetitive rehearsal we pass through many layers. A local community is washed away by a tide of change. The rhythm of life correlates to the rhythm of the editing and the grain of the film.

The director’s use of his cameras’ mechanical flaws adds to the texture of the images, evoking passing worlds being replaced by the new.

François-Ode-Award

Jury Award for special humanitarian expression

Endowed with EUR 1.500,-

The wooden Carpet

Black and White Trypps Number Three

Ben Russel, USA 2007, 11:55 min, experimental documentary

Jury statement: We chose Black & White Trypps (No 3) by Ben Russell unanimously for its intensity, simplicity and hypnotic qualities. The one shot gave a feeling of a tribal ritual where people are lost in their own needs and dreams beyond society. The young crowd are intimate yet simultaneously miles apart.

The death of one

Patrick Doberenz und Philipp Enders, Germany 2009, 31:00 min., documentary

Jury statement: An innovative examination of the process of dying and all it entails in a visually abstract and aesthetically well-presented environment. Captured from a special angle, the film manages to strip off cultural conventions and tells the story with great sympathy for its characters - gripping and with great emotional density. Going beyond traditional narrative techniques and false sentimentality, this film puts the protagonist to bed with a pick-axe and shovel.

Wagah

Supriyo Sen, Germany 2009, 12:00 min., documentary

Jury statement: "Wagah" is a parable on the absurdity of artificial borders and the resulting separation of neighbours and relatives. Through a daily ceremony, Indians and Pakistanis take over Wagah as a political space and absurdify reality in a performative transformational act.

The film explores the almost surreal event from both sides of the border and adds a layer of irony and profound political insight. Wagah is great cinema!

Jerrycan

Julius Avery, Australia 2008, 13:15 min., short fiction

Jury statement: This Australian short film examines the subject of growing up with extraordinary simplicity and precision. Ties amongst men, tests of courage and existential decisions are brilliantly mastered by young actors, underlined by visual and acoustic strength, which makes „Jerrycan“ a special cineastic delight.

Cuddling with Politicians

Christian 3 Rooosen, Germany 2008, 4:51 min., experimental documentary

Jury statement: Never have politicians been closer to the citizens, never caresses so public and somehow sticky. Christian 3 Rooosen brings together what belongs together but is actually rarely combined, at least, not in this particular way and in public: politicians and voters. Christian 3 Rooosen has showered the world with love. Cuddling with Politicians – a witty concept and a touching film!

Rif (Das Riff)

Eric Steegstra, Netherlands 2008, 12:00 mins, animation film

Jury statement: WOW! Great! Eric Steegstra’s movie ‚Rif’ is particularly exciting and well designed. It must have been very difficult to create the whole thing from fabric. Everything looks authentic, the puppets seem so real, you can empathise with the little fish. The music is emotional and matches perfectly. The soundscape makes you believe to be right in the middle of the ocean. We loved the puppets’ motions. While watching ‚Rif’ you feel the magnificence of the sea.

Mo-Award

Varde (Steinhaufen)

Hanna Larsen, Norway 2008, 15:30 min., short fiction

Jury statement: This film convinced us by its gripping plot and two strong main characters to empathise with. You can easily feel the emotions in a situation that is very common among today’s youths, although this presented in a quite extreme way. The film is impressing due to its great tension, a precise use of light, as well as the spooky music and sounds. A perfect setting and a happy ending – a wonderful movie!

High Five! – Competition

Three awards with the total value of EUR 600,- sponsored by GEOlino with support of BINGO – the lottery to the benefit of the environment and nue presented by the Mo- and Friese-Jury.

1. Prize: EUR 300,-

The Arctic is melting

Pia Genz, Germany 2009, 4:20 min.,
 short fiction

Jury statement: A very inventive and cheerful movie. A fondly designed setting, great sound and the idea to let rats play the parts convinced us to give this prize to ‘The Arctic is melting.’

2. Prize: EUR 200,-

HOT

Edvard Granum Dillner, Norway 2009, 3:54 min., animation film

Jury statement: "Realising a serious topic in a funny way" – this may have been the producers’ notion when they created the film. This short is an easily understandable animation with lovely designed plasticine characters. In order to acknowledge the film’s playful ideas such as the ‘iFreeze’, ‘Hot’ is given our second prize.

3. Prize: EUR 100,-

Recycling – A Matter of Today and Tomorrow

Clemens Fröde und Philipp Will, Germany 2009, 3:34 min., documentary
