Making of a memory
Selecting the International Competition. An unfathomable flood of pictures. What will remain on the retina, what will jitter on, and what will burn itself into the memory and become part of it? What will fleetingly pass on, like a traveller, to whom movement itself is everything in itself?
What will become unmovable stock within the personal archive of heard and seen stories, characters and the interplay of forms? Did one’s heavy eyelids reliably allow all the great, deep and risky items to pass through? Or did something escape, because for a moment the senses themselves had left? What remains? What penetrates?
Dogs, dogs and dogs again. Drawn, photographed, tamed, spoiled, run to seed, forgotten, fed, eloped, kidnapped, searched, brought back. The frequency of motherless families and stories of hindered adolescence is rather conspicuous as well. Also featured are planes, soldiers, forests, primeval scenes, bored, smoking girls, misplaced toddlers, generation spanning border lining, and an occasional small, fat robot. Until panting creeps back onto the audio track. The dog emergence will remain just one of many puzzles. For »interpretation is the end of all art«, as Susan Sontag wrote. Hence the films shall speak for themselves now.
This year, 2.478 films were submitted for the International Competition. Every film is a challenge, and some are events. Watching them will leave none of us unchanged.
We cordially thank everybody who submitted a film!
