A Wall Is a Screen: Out of the City Into the City

Friday | 10.06.2011 | 22.30 | Meetingpoint CCH Main Entrance

›Into the city‹ is a turn of phrase with different meanings, depending on where you live. If you are in the suburbs, it can mean downtown Hamburg, in Altona it once meant the Neue Große Bergstraße and for people from the plains beyond suburbia, this may even refer to Hamburg as a whole. The one thing they all have in common is that the term refers to a movement towards a certain degree of urbanity.

The distances covered don’t even have to be that big. Right in the middle of Hamburg, the combination of the Congress Center Hamburg and ›Planten un Blomen‹ offers an attractive co-existence of urbanity and nature. At some places in the city you aren’t even aware of your proximity to nature. This juxtaposition is the starting point of a short film tour with A Wall Is a Screen that takes you out of the city and into the city. We will screen films about contemporary life in the city, the countryside and the movement in between on a number of facades amidst the green and the grey.

The event does not depend on the weather. In the case of rain, we will seek out alternative, dry locations. Admission free.

Eight encounters of the eerie kind

The programme was presented as a new idea for a distribution programme at last year’s Hamburg International Short Film Festival, and it has been touring German cinemas since March 2011. If you missed the programme in 2010, you can now scare yourself senseless in the ›Chamber of Horrors‹ at the IKFF-Festivalcenter Meisterwerkstatt. The programme’s eight short films offer a unique compilation of shorts from the international world of thrillers and horrors.

Fancy at little taste of the horror? Here is the Trailer.

Admission is 6 Euro.

16:9 Full HD

Thursday | 09.06.2011 | 21.45 | Lichtmess Kino

»Compared to our old PAL resolution with 750 x 576 = 414,720 pixels, HD resolution gives you 1,920 x 1,080 = 2,073,600 pixels, that is 1,658,880 pixels more. Expressed in percentages, HD offers us 400% more picture.« (Marion Pfaus in ›16:9 Full HD‹).

Lichtmess Cinema went digital in March. For the Short Film Distribution of the KurzFilmAgentur Hamburg this is reason enough to present a selection from XK Shorts – Short Films for Digital Cinema. We will present entertaining short narrative and animated films alongside rarely screened short film classics in a digital format and of course the film that gave the programme its name.

Mo&Friese Late Night

Thursday | 09.06.2011 | 22.00 | 3001 Kino

There are no frills and furbelows in any of the Mo&Friese programmes. Even if the festival’s main intention is to bring an understanding of cinematic art to children between 4 and 14, there is more to these fi lms than pure entertainment value. Our selection of documentaries as well as narrative and animated fi lms consists of small gems and jewels, and their sparkle and shine makes them more than viewable for a critical grown up audience as well. Subjects such as friendship, loss or the realization of being different have no best-before date. While we are making sure that the specific realisation of any given motive is accessible to and interesting for the relevant age group, a lot of the directors had originally conceived their films for a grown up audience and had entered them in the Hamburg International Short Film Competition. So among the films for the little ones, you can find plenty of films for adults as well.

At this year’s Late Night at the 3001 cinema at a time suitable for a grown up audience, we will be presenting a special programme filled with films from all Mo&Friese competitions. This will allow both curious sceptics and ardent fans to be convinced and swept along at the same time. The Late Night will also work as a platform for getting in touch with the directors present.

We are not offering you a time journey back to your childhood, but an entertaining evening with unusual films. Be brave and take the time! And if you fail in your search for a babysitter for your own little night owls: Our programme will welcome everybody.

Favourites – Beyond Objectivity

Sunday | 12.06.2011 | 17.30 | zeise 2

Your heart is beating in sync with the flicker on the silver screen and slowly the realisation is dawning: »I love this film!« The mechanics behind the nomination of a favourite film are unpredictable, far beyond any objectivity and always personal.

We would like to examine the phenomenon of the favourite film and invite you to laid-back screening of the festival team’s personal highlights.

Members of the competition selection panel present their favourite films and offer insights into this year’s selection process.

Best of Competitions

Monday | 13.06.2011 | 17.30 | zeise 2 | Best of German Competition

Monday | 13.06.2011 | 19.45 | zeise 2 | Best of International Competition

Our Best-Of programmes are uninhibitedly subjective and they ignore all calls for a fair balance. In short they are a gallimaufry created by a mixture of chaos and passion. Of course every single self-respecting international short film festival in the world boasts to be the one with the best contemporary short films in the entire universe. And that’s the way it’s got to be. So let us join the choir and chant: »We are the best of the best! We rule, you drool!« But our love for the superlative can’t hide that each member of the selection committees had his or her personal favourites that triggered reactions of joy and ecstasy.

We want to take these moments of subjectivity and intimate love for individual films serious by giving them a special place in our festival. You can call it a higgledy-piggledy topsy-turvy cinematographic variety show, or something else, if that is too much of a mouthful for you. In the end, the only thing that counts is that you will be enjoying yourself. And we can vouch for that.

HamburgerKino invites you to the 10th KinoKabaret in the Gängeviertel

Shortfilmers of the world unite and take over

Between 2 June and 11 June, KinoKabaret Hamburg will offer you five 48 hours periods in which to plan, film, improvise, cut, dub, lose, find again, finish the rest in a cab, and most importantly: screen short films. At the end of each round, all films will be shown in a cinema.

Whether you are a professional going back to the streets, an actor, a musician, a comic artist addicted to chronic lack of sleep or a Hamburgian slacker ready to try out something new, we cordially invite you. And don’t worry, there will be a couple of dozen other wacky, open minded and motivated film freaks from all over the world turning the Gängeviertel into one big improvised short film laboratory where occasional melt-downs will not be conceived as disasters but as part of the artistic process. As always, the fourth round will be an all-silent one, which will be set to music live during the screening on 9 June.

Take a vacation, think of good excuses to use with your boss / honey bunny / casual date and pack in your toothbrush and your pink eye drops. We will provide the rest.

See you on Planet Cinema. Expect the unexpected...

Production meetings: 02. + 04. + 06. + 08. + 10.06.2011, 11.00 in the Gängeviertel
