Distribute! #3

PART 1: Where to Place Film Art?

Wednesday 8.6., 14.30 Uhr

PART 2: Interior Design in the Dungheep

Thursday 9.6., 14.30 Uhr

both at Festival Centre Meisterwerkstatt

The Academy of Free Arts Nürtingen and the Art Foundation Baden Württemberg has been discussing several methods of distributing film and video art with video artists, festival directors and gallery owners since 2006.

In Distribute! we discussed first questions regarding the distribution of film and media art with representatives of the art and film scene.

In 2010 the talks were continued in Distribute! #2 with the Kunstbüro Baden-Württemberg and the changing marketing conditions in the Web 2.0 were discussed. Apart from panels and lectures, workshops offered practical support. We are happy to have found a new partner in the KurzFilmAgentur Hamburg, allowing us to continue with and elaborate on the subject matter.

PART 1: WHERE TO PLACE FILM ART?

Where to place film art? Does it belong into the White Cube of a museum, a gallery or does it work in a cinema's Black Box? Or should it go directly into the Internet?

While cinema is all about multiplication, the art scene and its institutions are usually more interested in the scarcity of art. Is this where the trench between the viewing rooms of museums and those of the cinemas is located? We invited film artists to show their films and tell us about their experiences with different forms of reception and performance. And possibly about their wish for refinement in limited copies or conversely the disintegration of the concept of creator and auteur in the multiplying reaches of viral media.

With: Volko Kamensky (Filmmaker, Hamburg), Samm Haillay (Producer of Duane Hopkins, Third Films, Newcastle), Maike Mia Höhne (Head of Berlinale Shorts, Filmmaker, Curator, Hamburg-Berlin), Olaf Stüber (Galerist, Berlin), Angelika Ramlow (Arsenal Distribution, Berlin)

PART 2: INTERIOR DESIGN IN THE DUNGHEEP

»The Internet is a huge dungheep in which you can nonetheless find occasional small treasures and gems« (Joseph Weizenbaum)

During last year's panel, we asked the question: “Where is the parlour in virtual space?" Since then it has turned out that here are indeed a number of inviting and comfortable rooms. In some of them, short film has its place and has recently even begun to start making some money as well. Following up the previous day's discussion, this one will focus on how short film distributions can make a profit in these new situations. What are the implications of the propagation of short films on the Internet for the KurzFilmAgentur Hamburg's self-conception and its founding motivation of making short films more visible in general by finding new channels. And how can you retain the joy in creating programmes and presenting treasures while keeping the thought of distribution in mind?

With: Stine Wangler (Cultural Studies, Lüneburg), Gerald Weber (Art Film Distribution sixpack, Vienna), Stefanie Reis (World Sales KurzFilmAgentur Hamburg), Stephanie Lauke (Media Theorist, Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln), Andy Green (distrify, Edinburgh), Maxim Lacour (Directing Manager UniversCiné, Brussels)

Moderation: Wilbirg Brainin-Donnenberg

(Curator, Head of Branch Meetings diagonale Graz)

New Online Video-Content

Thursday | 9.6.2011 | 11.00 - 13.00 | Kantine

Festivalzentrum Meisterwerkstatt

You can find reports, shows, films, comedy and documentaries anywhere in the Internet these days. On the one hand, you find the so-called User Generated Content: films and clips created by users that are distributed on several platforms within the Web 2.0 for free. On the other hand, there is copyrighted material, some of which is exclusively created for distribution via the Internet and some is shown in cinemas and on television as well. Meanwhile, digital utilisation has become a sphere of business of its own right with big players and small niche market providers. This current development creates new opportunities for the audience by offering the chance to see contents that are no longer or not at all accessible by other means. For film creators and producers it opens up new markets and the chance to broaden their productions.

Philip Pratt is a specialist in digital film distribution and he is well versed in the judicial, technological and economical developments of the digital video market. He is the director and associate of Jakun Media UG and he will give an overview of the most exciting online video projects and the best digital content. Jakun Media is a trader in licenses and a film distributor that offers all genres and lengths through innovative and digital channels of distribution.

Presented with the friendly assistance: Haus der jungen Produzenten, Studio Hamburg

Filmmakers and experts will explain how crowd funding can be used as an alternative method of financing film projects and building a community. Director Jan Georg-Schu?tte and producer Dirk Decker (Riva Filmproduktion) will talk about their experiences with alternative ways of financing in the age of Web 2.0 using the film ›Leg ihn um!‹ as an example. For instance, they had been successful at raising money beforehand by getting many people excited

about the film with a fundraising campaign. Konrad Lauten, founder of the financing platform Inkubato, gives an overview on crowd funding. At Inkubato projects are presented from the fields of music, art, design, food, book and

film including the needed sums, run times and premiums which supporter get for their participation.

Arne Sommer, director of the Cultural Film Funding Schleswig-Holstein e.V., will be hosting the event.

After ›Freestyle Financing‹ the FFHSH invites the festival guests from Germany and abroad to a reception at 12.30 in the IKFF-Festivalcenter. During a snack you will have the opportunity to get to know contacts from the funding organisations and find out more about regional film funding.

Talent Meets Producer

For the last six years, the Hamburg International Short Film Festival has been offering a range of events aimed at promoting young talents and providing advanced training in the field of short films under the label ›Talent Meets

Producer‹.

We are mediating between selected filmmakers and producers in a unique project. Personal talks focus on networking and the exchange of experiences. The event is less about the talent pitching new projects to the producer, than it is about a creative exchange and the discussion of work perspectives. For this, we invited experienced German producers who will screen a selection of films beforehand, so that they can select their partners for the personal talks.

On the producer side, we have repeatedly been able to win over experienced representatives of German production companies. We are currently expecting the following production companies: Beleza Film, detailfilm, Filmtank, OneTwo Films, Riva Filmproduktion GmbH, Saubere Filme and Wüste Filmproduktion.

The personal talks will be arranged in the run-up to the festival and will be held as a closed event during the festival-week. The participation of directors and producers is only possible after a previous invitation.

Special Programm Sweden presents Filmfika

Saturday | 11.6.2011 | 14.30 | Kantine

Festivalzentrum Meisterwerkstatt

Due to the surprising efficiency of their language, the Swedes need only one word to describe coffee and cake in the afternoon: fika. We appreciate that and still want to know more: We want to discuss with the attending representatives of the Swedish film industry whether there is something typically Swedish about their films. Furthermore, we will talk about the conditions of short film creation in Sweden and the developments of recent years. Coffee, crisp bread and kanelbullar will be served as well.

The event is for free and will be held in English. Admission is free.

Short Film School at Mo&Friese

Wednesday | 8.6.2011 | 16.00 | zeise 2

Once again we will present a selection of our films at the Hamburg Children’s Short Film Festival. These films were created in our five-day workshops at schools in Hamburg. This includes the whole scope of childlike and juvenile forms of expression, from colourful animations and thrilling documentaries, over tragic and funny narrative shorts to films dealing with the most central questions about existence itself. The Short Film School is a project of the KurzFilmAgentur and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Media in Hamburg. The idea is to promote film education in schools by bringing filmmakers from Hamburg into the schools themselves, thus giving students the chance to gain hands-on experience in the art of filmmaking. Some examples will be screened at the zeise cinemas, where the Short Film School will present itself and its work within the frame of the Hamburg Children’s Short Film Festival.

Der Eintritt ist frei. Admission is free.
