Competitions 2009

The international competition is once again going to illuminate the things that brought filmmakers from all over the world behind their cameras. There is a noticeable increase of exotic animals over human actors. Furthermore, we were able to expand our programme by 2.5 traits: distinctiveness and (for the intelligentsia) the willingness to denounce civilization. Tee-Hee.

Once again, an explosive mix of filmic events has gathered in No Budget’s dark room. Open your eyes and break on through to the other side! We were able to create an exciting adventure tour made of private spheres, experimental film laboratories and narrative fantasies. If you want to see an Argentine street preacher with his message of doom, the gathering of two halves of a sunflower bread or the secret content of an Italian grandmother’s davenport, then this is your once in a lifetime chance.

“Everything you can see here may not actually exist, otherwise I could be mad.”

German Competition invites you to discover the international meaning of home: extraordinary folks, line crossings, wild animals or schizophrenia. A cosmos of identities, projected onto our own front doors. During the long short film night, Hamburgian short films will be washed up onto the silver screen, with their creators drifting along as flotsam.

When Google is breaking down, particle accelerators are imploding or a subway is crashing, the cause is usually the same: human error. However, a recent point of view tells us that “human errors” are a symptom of a deep-rooted defect in the interaction of man and machine itself. Now we are thinking: To err is human and failure is actually an opportunity! Just like mistakes in handling procedures may lead to trailblazing discoveries, human mishaps and slip-ups can actually turn into decent films. This year’s Three Minute Quickie is all about mishaps and failure.

“Sometimes, I get the heebie-jeebies and I find myself in a bit of a pickle: Is it haste makes waste or off you go? That’s when I’m saying to myself: “I may be mini but mighty and almost as courageous as the big ones. But apart from that, I am full of mischief.” The last paragraph contains all the programme titles from the 11th Mo&Friese Children’s Short Film Festival. There will be international short films for four age brackets and the Mo&Friese Late Night will once again prove that children’s shorts are not just for the little ones.
